Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have been separated since 2016.
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have been leading "completely separate lives" since 2016, according to Jada Pinkett Smith.
Pinkett Smith explained why the couple had waited so long to announce their split in a segment from her upcoming NBC News primetime special with Hoda Kotb. She said they were not "ready yet."
She claimed that the two of them were "still figuring out how to be in partnership."
She asked Kotb, "How do we present that to people?" "We hadn't made that connection,"
Smith, 55, and Pinkett Smith, 52, have been wed since 1997. According to Pinkett Smith, they are still married.
During the time she claims they have been away, their marriage has come under fire.
Pinkett Smith acknowledged having a romantic relationship with musician August Alsina in July 2020 when appearing alongside her spouse on an episode of "Red Table Talk."
At the time, Pinkett Smith admitted, "I got into an entanglement with August," adding that the famous couple "were going through a very difficult time" at the time.
The Oscars jab came next.
Smith stormed the stage at the 2022 Academy Awards and smacked presenter Chris Rock after the latter made a joke about Pinkett Smith's baldness. She had alopecia, which is why she lost her hair.
Pinkett Smith discussed the incident in detail in a recent interview with People. She admitted that, like many other people, she initially believed it to be a funny exchange between the two men.
"I assumed that this was a skit. I thought, 'There's no way that Will hit him,'" she remembered. I didn't even know it wasn't a skit until Will started to return to his chair.
When they were by themselves, she reportedly questioned Smith, "Are you okay?"
During their discussion, Pinkett Smith admitted to Kotb that "a lot of things" contributed to the breakdown of her marriage.
By the time we reached 2016, I believe we were both simply worn out from trying, Pinkett Smith said. We may have both been mired in fantasies about how the other should be, according to one of us.
She asserted that she "made a promise" to Smith that they would never have a reason to divorce, and that "I just haven't been able to break that promise."
In her upcoming memoir, "Worthy," Pinkett Smith shares more information about her marriage, professional life, and early years. The book debuts on October 17.
